Kuala Lumpur made winning starts to both the Malaysian National 50 Overs Championship and T20 Inter State Championship last weekend as they sought to remain the country’s cricket kingpins.
A four-wicket haul by Virandeep Singh propelled KL to an eight-wicket win over Johor under the Duckworth-Lewis method in the 50-overs match at the Mutiara Rini Oval in Johor Baru on Saturday.
On Sunday, KL opened the defence of their T20 national title with a commanding 73-run win over Johor.
KL won the T20 title last year by beating Perak in the final while the city side were also champions of the Premier League and Premier Cup 50-overs competitions which were last held in 2018.
Perak also notched double wins by overcoming Selangor by 23 runs at the Kinrara Oval in the T20 format after claiming victory over the same opponents by 14 runs in the 50-overs match on Saturday.
Saifullah Malik’s unbeaten half-century allowed KL to post 180 for four in 20 overs before Anwar Rahman and Nazril Rahman took three wickets each to restrict Johor to 107-9 at the Mutiara Rini Oval in the T20 match.
Free-hitting opener Saifullah, named man-of-the-match, smashed seven boundaries and a six off 53 balls to score 78 runs as he featured in a 58-run stand with Arjoon Thillainathan (11) and a 72-run partnership with Virandeep Singh.
Meanwhile, national team captain Ahmad Faiz Mohammad Noor continued his fine form over the weekend with a second successive fifty by scoring 52 as Perak reached 154-7 in 20 overs before Sharvin Muniandy claimed three wickets to restrict Selangor to 131-9.
The next matches in the MCA Seniors 50 Overs Championship is scheduled for Feb 15 with a blockbuster clash between KL and Perak at the Kinrara Oval while Negeri Sembilan visit Johor. The T20 matches follow the next day.
